Iran hangs another political dissident

Iran executed another political activist today in Western Azerbaijan Province charged with membership in the Kurdistan Free Life Party (Pezhak).

Iranian officials announced that the death sentence was carried out in Urumieh Prison following confirmation from all pertinent judicial sources.

While refraining from identifying the prisoner, the official report maintains that the prisoner was “a long-time high rank member of Pezhak” who was directly involved in the killing of a security official at a border stop in Urumieh Province six years ago.

Pezhak organization, which the Islamic Republic government considers a terrorist group, is a Kurdish dissident group in Iran that was founded in 2004 with a mission to “topple Iran’s central governmen.”

The number of executions in the past month in Iran has suddenly surged with a number of political prisoners amongst the executed.

In early December, 15 people were hanged in Zahedan charged with “enmity against God” and “corruption of the earth”, charges the Islamic Republic often presses against its dissidents.

In the past month, Ali Saremi and Ali Akbar Siadat were also hanged in Evin Prison charged with membership in the People’s Mojahedin Organization and espionage respectively.

Another 26 people were hanged in the past month for drug-related charges in various Iranian cities.

Iran keeps holding on to the second highest world record in the number of executions.
