Iranian women MPs attack Rahnavard

Zahra Rahnavard

Women MPs of the Iranian parliament have called on the judiciary to prosecute Zahra Rahnavard, one of Iran’s opposition leaders.

Tayebeh Safai, head of this faction says that Zahra Rahnavard has insulted “the sanctities of the regime and the ideals of the Islamic Republic” and should stand trial as “one of the leaders of sedition.”

Iranian establishment refers to MirHosein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, the opposition leaders who have challenged the presidential elections of 2009, as “leaders of sedition.”

Tayebeh Safai, Tehran representative in the parliament, claimed that Rahnavard’s actions are similar to those of Maryam Rajavi, leader of the dissident group, People’s Mojahedin Organization.

She contended that Rahnavard’s “anti-regime stance has isolated her from the Islamic society and in particular women and planted her support only amongst anti-Revolutionaries.”

Maryam Behrouzi, another female MP, echoed Safai in condemning Rahnavard, saying: “Rahnavard did not believe in the Islamic Revolution and the leadership of an expert cleric (Velayat faqih) from the very start and she has always had anti-Revolutionary and deviatory ideas.”

Eshrat Shayegh, member of Isargaran Society maintained: “The leaders of sedition have gradually revealed their ties to terrorist and anti-Revolutionary groups.”

The Islamic Republic establishment has ratcheted up attacks against the opposition leaders in the past weeks with a number of officals making fresh threats of prosecution against them.

Zahra Rahanvard has repeatedly spoken out against the crackdown on political dissidents in the past year and a half and accused the government of acting against Islamic principles.
