One of the country’s oldest sugar refineries has been brought to a halt due to problems with the supply of raw materials, leaving 400 workers without a job.
Management at the Varamin Sugar Refinery announced that “a shortage of raw materials needed for production” has led to the closure of the plant, ILNA reported on Monday January 26.
Workers report that the Ministry of Agriculture has halted the import of raw sugar, which is needed by their plant. The plant had 110 permanent and 290 contract full-time workers.
Prior to this, workers would be laid off occasionally due to a raw sugar shortage; however, they would continue to receive wages. This time the workers have been laid off and referred to employment insurance services.
Varamin Sugar Refinery was built in 1935 and designed by famous Russian architect Nicolai Markov. The building is registered on Iran’s Cultural Heritage List.
