Iran’s Foreign Ministry reports that 3,500 Iranians are incarcerated outside Iran. Hassan Qashqavi, the Foreign Ministry’s Deputy For Consular Affairs, told IRNA on Thursday October 9 that Iranian consular efforts are successful in releasing a third of these prisoners each year.
He added that whenever Iranians are imprisoned in country that has extradition agreements with Iran, the individuals can be extradited to serve out their sentences in Iran.
Qashqavi said Iran has extradition agreements with 22 countries, including Thailand and Turkey, and a new addition to that list is Turkmenistan, where the agreement is in the process of being adopted.
In May, the number of Iranians serving prison terms outside Iran was reported as 3,130.
