MP threatens confrontation in Parliament over opposition leaders
Ali Motahari

Iranian MP Ali Motahari has reportedly warned Hassan Rohani that if he fails to address the issue of the house arrest of opposition leaders MirHosein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, the issue will be presented to him in the form of a formal session of questioning in Parliament.

A report on Nameh News indicates that Motahari has written to the president acknowledging his administration’s efforts in the areas of foreign policy and the economy, but he indicates that President Rohani has made no progress in the field of internal politics and the third section of the constitution pertaining to people’s rights.

He adds that the groups which opposed Rohani in the election have become even more extremist in their actions in the area of domestic politics, and these actions, according to Motahari, have been met with silence by the administration.

Motahari writes that the president is responsible for ensuring the constitution is followed, and if any of the other branches of government violates it, at the very least he is responsible for speaking out against it.

He goes on to add that MiHosein Mousavi , Mehdi Karroubi and Zahra Rahnavard have been under house arrest for over three years without any formal charges brought against them and with no chance to defend themselves; this is against the constitution, the MP stresses.

These opposition leaders were put under house arrest in February of 2011 for having challenged the 2009 election victory of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad with allegations of vote fraud. The judiciary has not charged them with any crimes, but they are completely isolated and denied contact with the outside world except for limited visits from family.
