Security chief okay with social networking sites

The head of Iran’s Security Forces says he does not support the blocking of social networking sites as long as “security issues and concerns are observed.”

The Mehr News Agency reported on September 23 that Esmail Ahmadi Moghaddam said: “The Supreme Council has created the necessary platform for the activity of social networking sites and security, and safety issues should be observed in the development of this space.”

Facebook and other social networking sites are blocked in Iran by the government, and users have to use proxies to access them.

Most recently, the first deputy of the judiciary, Gholamhosein Mohseni Ejei, called on the Minister of Communication and IT to block the mobile networking sites Whatsapp, Viber and Tango, citing criminal activity such as insulting sanctities as the cause of judiciary’s demand.
