Activists rally around jailed female volleyball fan

Three hundred Iranian political and cultural activists have written to President Hassan Rohani, drawing attention to the dismal situation of Ghoncheh Qavami in Evin Prison and urging the government to respect her citizen’s rights and facilitate her release.

According to a report on Kaleme on Tuesday September 23, the letter notes that Qavami has been held for 80 days, with the first 41 days in solitary confinement.

Last July, Qavami was one of the women who insisted on being allowed to enter a Tehran stadium to watch a game of volleyball.

Qavami, according to the signatories, is a law graduate who had recently returned from Britain after completing her studies.

The signatories stress that the treatment of Qavami by security forces, namely “the violation of a detainee’s rights, the harsh treatment of Iranians who have returned to Iran from abroad and the barring of women from stadiums” are signs of the security forces’ resistance to the fulfillment of Hassan Rohani’s campaign promises, and the administration’s silence could cause the public to lose confidence in his government.
