The Iranian and U.S. foreign ministers met on the sidelines of the nuclear talks between Iran and the 5+1 in New York City, discussing the nuclear negotiations and the threat of ISIS.
Reports indicate that Mohammad Javad Zarif and John Kerry met at the Waldorf Astoria for over an hour, and while the two foreign ministers initially talked among themselves, they later continued in the presence of their deputies.
U.S. diplomats have reported that the two spoke about the progress of the atomic negotiations and that Kerry has stressed that this week offers an opportunity to achieve greater progress.
The remaining points of contention include the number of Iran’s nuclear centrifuges, the level of uranium enrichment to be allowed in Iran and the activities at the Arak heavy water reactor.
No details have been given about the content of their discussion regarding the Sunni militant group ISIS and the possibility of Iran cooperating with the international coalition against it.
