The execution of a man in Mazandaran Province was cancelled as a result of protests by his family and friends at the scene of execution.
The Iran daily reports that the man, referred to only as “Mohsen”, was set to be hanged on Monday September 1 in public in Mahmoudabad.
Three thousand people were present at the scene and, according to the report, “noise and commotion and physical actions resulting from an attack on a security fence” led to the cancellation of the execution.
The decision to postpone the execution was taken by the city’s Security Council and judiciary officials.
The condemned prisoner was found guilty of stabbing a young man to death in a street brawl.
In recent months, the families of death row inmates have been showing increased resistance to the execution of their kin by staging protests in front of prisons and judicial offices.
