Iranian authorities have identified 12 gangs involved in human organ trafficking, says the head of Transplants and Special Diseases at the Ministry of Health.
Katayoon Najafizadeh told the Shargh newspaper on Tuesday September 2 that these gangs receive organs from Iranians and provide them at exorbitant prices to foreign nationals.
In August, the Ministry of Intelligence reported the dismantling of an organ trafficking gang. The traffickers would allegedly forge identification documents for presentation to medical authorities to skirt the law and carry out their schemes.
In Iran, individuals can legally sell their organs. However, the sale cannot be made to a foreign national.
