Journalist’s arrest extended despite lack of trial

The arrest warrant for jailed journalist Saba Azarpeyk has been renewed again for another month despite Azarpeyk’s objections and her demand for due process.

In a report by the Etemad daily, Mahmoud Alizadeh Tabatabayi, Azarpeyk’s lawyer, said the investigation is now complete and his client should be given a chance to face her charges.

Azarpeyk was arrested in June at her workplace after a complete search of her office.

Akram Mohammadi, Azarpeyk’s mother, says her daughter was interrogated only during the first month of her arrest, so there is no longer a reason to keep her in custody.

At the time of Azarpeyk’s arrest, 147 Iranian journalists issued a statement of protest against her treatment and called for her immediate release.

Azarpeyk was reportedly arrested for her investigations into the mistreatment of prisoners at Evin Prison.
