The Iranian foreign minister is travelling to Muscat to meet with his counterparts from Oman, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
Iranian media report that Mohammad Javad Zarif's trip coincides with the launching of the north-south transit route connecting Middle Asia to the Persian Gulf.
Iran proposed the establishment of this transit route in 2010 and the agreement was signed in the Turkmen capital of Ashgabat in 2011.
Earlier reports mentioned Qatar as a party to the agreement; however, in the latest reports there is no mention of Qatar.
Zarif has spoken of the importance of this transit route, referring to the key role of Central Asian countries in regional economic development and their importance in the production of minerals, oil and gas in the region and the world. He added that the Sea of Oman and Persian Gulf area has a great capacity for the development of international transit and transportation.
