Conservative MP Ali Motahari has once again condemned the house arrest of MirHosein Mousavi, Zahra Rahnavard and Mehdi Karroubi, saying recent statements by Prosecutor General Gholamhosein Mohseni Ejei indicate that he has condemned them to life imprisonment without a trial or a chance to defend themselves.
Mohseni Ejei was responding to recent efforts to bring about the release of the opposition leaders, who have been under house arrest since 2011 for challenging the results of the 2009 presidential election and triggering widespread street protests. The Prosecutor General said yesterday that the establishment has treated these people with much tolerance and they should in fact be made to pay dearly for their “sin”.
Motahari was quoted as saying: “The gist of your position is that if they repent, they will be forgiven; this is neither logical nor in accordance with Sharia.”
Motahari has been repeatedly calling for the judiciary to provide the opposition leaders, who have been held for over three years without any trial or formal charges, a chance to make their defence in an open court.
