A police officer and two other people were killed in an armed attack in Sistan-Baluchistan Province, the head of the province’s security forces reports.

Hossein Rahimi told the Fars News Agency on January 21 that police officers were called to the scene of a road accident but upon arrival the officers were shot at from the vehicle.

Sistan-Baluchistan province has been targeted with a number of similar armed attacks in recent months. Jeysh-ol-Adl, a Sunni militant group which claims to fight for the rights of Sunnis in the region, has generally taken responsibility for most of these attacks.

Since September, at least 10 people have been killed in similar attacks.

The government has confirmed serious concerns regarding security in the region and it generally refers to the attackers as “bandits”.
