Despite the Taliban’s initial promise to respect women’s rights after their takeover in 2021, the most basic rights of Afghan girls and women have only been disappearing. Unlike their male counterparts, Afghan girls have not returned to school since August 2021, leaving little hope for the possibility of an education. Afghan refugees who flee to Iran are provided with just as little opportunity, as the Iranian regime makes no effort to recognize Afghans as asylum seekers (See Zamaneh’s Labor Reports). Despite the obstacles, education activists like the recently detained Matiullah Wesa and Hossein, an ex-teacher who runs a secret school for girls with his wife, continue to fight against the Taliban’s brutal repression of human rights.
