On this International Women’s Day, the hashtag “one hundred influential women” is trending in Persian. Nika Shakarami, the 16 year old girl who was kidnapped and murdered by Iranian authorities; Fatemeh Heydari, the mourning sister of Javad Heydari who cut her hair at her brother’s grave; the school girls in Karaj who kicked out their principal and Zara Mohammadi, the Kurdish activist and teacher who shared a video immediately after her release from prison in which she says, “I declare that I will never ask for forgiveness, I will continue my journey and I will stand my ground.” These women represent pieces of the woman, life, freedom movement and women’s continuous fight for freedom on this day.
