Activist Atena Farghdani handed heavy jail term

Atena Farghdani

The appellate court has overturned the decision of the preliminary court for jailed Iranian artist Atena Farghdani, reducing her sentence from 12 years and nine months to just 18 months. This means that she will have served out her sentence by May 12 and be set to be released.

HRANA quoted Farghdani’s lawyer saying that the appellate court has acquitted his client of the charge of “assembly and collusion to commit crimes against national security” and suspended her three-year sentence for “insulting the leader”.

He added that her nine-month sentence for “insulting the president, members of Parliament and Revolutionary Guards officers in section 2A of Evin Prison” has been changed to a fine and her 18-month sentence for “propaganda activities against the Islamic Republic regime” has been upheld.

Mohammad Moghimi said since the 18-month sentence will be completed on May 12, we will see Farghdani released.

Farghdani is a children’s rights activist, blogger and fine arts graduate from Alzahra University. She was first arrested last August and released in early November on bail. After an interview with the Jaras website regarding her mistreatment in Evin Prison, she was once again summoned to court in January and rearrested.
