Banners commemorating the late Ayatollah Jalaleddin Taheri, the former Friday Mass Imam of Isfahan, were removed from the city on Sunday by city officials, ILNA reports.
The service is to take place on Tuesday June 2 with a speech from Abdolvahed Mousavi Lari, the former interior minister under the Mohammad Khatami government.
The son of the late cleric told ILNA: “This is not proper treatment of the friends of the Revolution.”
Ayatollah Taheri was Friday Mass Imam of Isfahan from 1972 to 2001. He resigned from the position in protest against the house arrest of dissident cleric Ayatollah Montazeri.
At the time, the media was banned from publishing Ayatollah Taheri’s open letter of resignation and the Azad daily was shut down for publishing it.
Ayatollah Taheri also lent his support to MirHosein Mousavi in the 2009 presidential elections and challenged the legitimacy of the process, saying: “I echo the voice of the majority of the people who have lost their votes saying this election is void and I consider the continuation of the head of the government for another term an illegitimate act of usurpation.”
The funeral for Ayatollah Taheri was held in June of 2013 with 500,000 people.
