Prominent student activist Majid Tavakoli was released from Rejai Shahr Prison in Karaj on Sunday May 10 at the end of his sentence.
Tavakoli was arrested in December of 2009 after he gave a speech to mark National Students’ Day at Amir Kabir University.
Tavakoli was sentenced to five years in jail for “propaganda against the regime and insulting the president and the leader”.
He is now 29 years old and during his prison term he went on a hunger strike and published open letters on several occasions to protest prison conditions.
He was sentenced to another six months in jail for publishing a letter from inside prison, again on the occasion of National Students’ Day.
