MP complaints lead to action on “starred” students

A spokesman for Iran’s Article 90 Commission says following complaints from three MPs about the minister of science, the commission has finally managed to obtain the files of “starred” students.

“Starred” students are university students who have been marked by the authorities for reasons such as political or social activism and, therefore, prevented from pursuing their studies.

IRNA reports that Mostafa Afzali said three MPs had complained that new Minister of Science Reza Faraji Dana has not been providing the commission with the files of starred students.

An Ardebil MP reported earlier that the ministry was refusing to provide Parliament’s education commission with all the files.

He stressed that the Article 90 Commission has looked at the complaints and has determined that the files of starred students should be forwarded to the members of the education commission.

Since it took power last August, the Rohani administration has made many efforts to open up the political atmosphere of the country, especially in the universities, but it has met with fierce resistance from hardliners in the Islamic Republic establishment.
