Water shortages threaten Tehran, other cities

Iran’s Ministry of Power reports that Tehran is on the verge of a water shortage, saying: “Arak, Isfahan, Shiraz, Qazvin, Qom, Karaj, Kerman, Mashhad, Hamedan and Yazd are other cities that are now water-stressed.”

The Mehr News Agency quoted Rahim Meydani, the Deputy Minister of Energy and Water Affairs, as saying on Saturday April 12: “Tehran and 10 other cities in Iran are facing water stress, and a 10-percent reduction in water consumption may allow the summer to pass with minimal water shortages.”

He went on to add that 37 million people and 517 cities are prone to water stress. He explained that this meant that the water resources for these cities are just enough to provide for the demand, while the optimal situation would be to have a cushion of 25 percent.

In other reports, the volume of water in dams around the country is said to have fallen by 10 percent compared to last year.
