Iranian mountaineers missing in Broad Peak

Three Iranian mountaineers went missing after they began their descent on Tuesday from the 12th highest peak on earth in Northern Pakistan.

Pakistani officials reported today Sunday July 21 that they have called of the search. According to Manzoor Hussain, President of Pakistan’s Alpine Club the group sent a call for help on Tuesday while descending the peak after their successful ascent.

Hussain reports that the message indicated that the group was exhausted and had ran out of food.

He added that rescue teams have failed to locate the climbers and the helicopter search was called off on Sunday July 21. Hussain maintained however that the group contacted Iran via satellite on Saturday.

Aydin Borzorgi, Puya Keyvani and Mojtaba Jarahi are the three Iranian mountaineers that went missing upon return from the 8051m Broad Peak also known as K3.

The three mountaineers are members of a five-person group named Arash and on Tuesday July 16, they reached the tip of Broad Peak.

The group’s blog updates indicate that upon return the climbers were diverted from their route finding themselves in a dangerous situation. Kouh News another source of mountain sports in Iran reports that the last communication with the three missing athletes took place on Saturday at 7:30 PM and since then there has been no news of them.

Iran’s federation of Mountain Climbing has announced that the three climbers had not received permits from them for this climb and were an independent group.
