Iranian police announce election security headquarters

Iranian police announced today, April 16, that they have established a new base for “the provision of election security” in the presidential election of 2013.

Brigadier General Saeed Montazeralmehdi announced that the election base Fajr has been established to provide complete security for the election, and police will also monitor anti-regime websites and social media in the course of their duties.

Iran’s 11th presidential election as well as city council elections will take place on June 13.

The deputy police chief added that all election meetings must first be approved with the proper permits from the Minister of the Interior.

The result of the last presidential election was challenged by reformist candidates, and the allegations of vote fraud led to widespread street demonstrations, which were met with a severe state crackdown.

The two candidates that challenged the result of the election, MirHosein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, have been under house arrest for over two years, and reformists have been basically excluded from the political scene since the last election.

Iran’s Supreme Leader has said that the enemy has been trying to use the occasion of the election to threaten the country’s security.
