Harshest charges evaded in Kahrizak case

Saeed Mortazavi, the notorious former Tehran Prosecutor, has been indicted for “participating in unlawful detentions” and “assistance in setting up false reports or encouraging such actions in relevant officials”, but formerly mentioned charges of “conspiring in murder and torture” have been dropped from his list of charges.

ILNA reports that the other two judiciary officials involved in the case are also facing charges limited to “assistance in setting up false reports.”

The three have been suspects in the case of Kahrizak Prison, where in 2009 a group of detained protesters was tortured and abused. Three of the detainees, Amir Javadifar, Mohsen Ruholamini and Mohammad Kamrani, were killed under torture at Kahrizak, and when the news of their deaths hit the media, the prison was shut down by the order of Iran’s Supreme Leader.

Saeed Mortazavi, Tehran’s Prosecutor at the time, along with Judge Haddad and another prosecutor, Ali Akbar Javadifar, were suspended pending the investigation into the case, which has taken over three years.

Mortazavi will stand trial tomorrow on February 26, and media reports indicate that the proceedings will be open to public.
