Political prisoner faces new charges
Faezeh Hashemi

Iranian political prisoner Faezeh Hashemi is facing new charges for “disruption of prison order”, her lawyer Gholamali Riyahi reported.

Riyahi told ISNA: “The case has not yet been processed, and no sentence has yet been issued.”

Faezeh Hashemi, the daughter of Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani, of Iran’s Expediency Council, is serving a six-month sentence for speaking critically about government officials in the media.

She has been a vocal spokesperson for prisoner rights, and the head of Iranian prisons previously said that Faezeh Hashemi “repeatedly violates rules and regulations of the prison.”

In the past two, months Faezeh Hashemi and other prisoners in the women’s section of Evin Prison have engaged in various forms of protest against the treatment of prisoners by prison authorities.

The protests landed Hashemi in solitary confinement by strict order of the judiciary.

Hashemi’s lawyer stressed that his client’s six-month sentence is supposed to end in March and expressed every hope that she will soon be released.

Faezeh Hashemi was sentenced to six months for the charge of “propaganda against the regime” which refers to her interview with Roozonline, in which she refers to Iranian officials as “thugs and hoodlums.”

The Hashemi family became a repeated target of attacks following the 2009 election protests, and Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani was removed as head of the Assembly of Experts for his support of those who challenged the election outcome.
