Daughters of opposition leaders arrested
Rahnavard and Mousavi

Zahra and Nargess Mousavi, the daughters of MirHosein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard, who are Iranian opposition leaders under house arrest, were arrested on Monday morning February 11.

The Kaleme website issued an urgent bulletin today saying: “Ahead of February 14 and the start of MirHosein Mousavi, Rahnavard and Karroubi’s third year of house arrest, security officials raided the home of two of Mousavi’s daughters and, after hours of searching, arrested them.”

On February 14, 2011, Mehdi Karroubi and MirHosein Mousavi together rallied their supporters to join a peaceful demonstration in support of the Arab uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia. The rally in Tehran and other major cities led to the widespread arrest of protesters and political activists.

Mehdi Karroubi as well as MirHosein Mousavi and his wife Zahra Rahnavard were put under house arrest after this event and have been cut off from the outside world ever since.

Iranian authorities have ignored the outcry against the illegal arrest of these opposition leaders, who are being held without any formal charges being laid against them.

The Karroubi and Mousavi children have repeatedly condemned the treatment of their parents.

Two weeks ago, the daughters of Mousavi and Rahnavard spoke out once again against the house arrest of their parents, saying their situation is no different than a “kidnapping.”

The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has called on the Islamic Republic authorities to end the “arbitrary” arrest of MirHosein Mousavi, Mehdi Karroubi and Zahra Rahnavard.
