Progress made in nuclear talks with Iran
Ali Asghar Soltanieh

Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iran’s representative at the International Atomic Energy Agency, says yesterday’s talks in Tehran were “constructive and positive” and will continue next month.

AFP reported on Friday December 14 that Soltanieh said the new round of talks will take place in January 2013.

Herman Nackaerts, the deputy head of the UN nuclear watchdog, told reporters in Vienna today that his team did make some progress during the Tehran talks and it will resume an investigation into Iran’s nuclear activities early next year.

Nackaerts headed up the IAEA delegation that visited Tehran yesterday to discuss their concerns over nuclear issues with Iranian officials. Earlier he had said that his team included technical experts, and they were prepared to inspect the Parchin Military Base if Iranian authorities could arrange it.

The IAEA claims that it has received some intelligence that the base might have been used to run nuclear tests.

Nackaerts told reporters that the agreement to allow the IAEA investigation to resume is a sign of progress, adding that the agency expects to “start implementing” this agreement shortly after the the new round of talks scheduled for January of 2013 in Tehran.
