Parliamentary Commission passes restriction on women’s travel
Hossein Naghavi-Hosseini

Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission has passed a bill to bar single women under 40 from leaving the country without permission from a legal guardian.

The spokesman for Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, Hossein Naghavi-Hosseini, said Parliament was persuaded to consider the government’s proposed bill after hearing reports from experts about problems with the current regulations.,

The bill proposes that single women up to 40 years of age wishing to leave the country or get a passport should have permission from their parent or legal guardian, and in case there are no guardians, they should acquire a permit from the court. Naghavi-Hosseini stressed, however, that the bill has not become law yet.

According to current regulations, single women 18 and up can leave the country without such restrictions.

The parliamentary spokesman stressed that the new restrictions on women’s rights to leave the country are being proposed for “protection of women’s well-being.”

According to Islamic Republic laws, married women, at any age, need permission from their husband in order to travel abroad.
