Parliamentary speaker cancels press conference
Ali Larijani

The head of the Iranian Parliament cancelled a press conference today just three hours before it was scheduled to begin and no reasons were offered for the cancellation.

Ali Larijani was supposed to meet with official Iranian press reporters today, one day after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad gave a press conference.

The cancellation comes as reports of unrest in the Tehran Bazaar are hitting the media, revealing that retailers and shop owners are closing their businesses due to turmoil in the currency market and the rial’s freefall.

Earlier, Ali Larijani had blamed the policies of the Ahmadinejad administration for wreaking havoc in the currency market.

Ahmadinejad criticized the head of Parliament for failing to lend a hand in solving the crisis.

As a result of U.S. and EU sanctions, Iran’s oil exports have been significantly reduced, which has led to a shortage of foreign currencies in the market and forced the national currency to tumble to unprecedented lows.
