Iran says envoy to Syria coming to visit
Lakhdar Brahimi

The UN-Arab League envoy for Syria will travel to Iran as part of his peacemaking efforts, an Iranian parliamentary official announced.

The head of Iranian Parliament’s international affairs, Hossein Sheikoleslam, told the Khaneh Mellat news agency: “Lakhdar Brahimi will visit Iran in order to help resolve the Syrian crisis and to discuss Iran’s position, which reveals Iran’s key role in the region and in resolving the Syrian crisis.”

He added that Brahimi is looking for a political solution to end the bloodshed and terrorism.

Reuters reported, however, that Brahimi’s spokesman in Geneva said there are still no confirmed plans for travel to Iran.
Lakhdar Brahimi, a veteran Algerian diplomat, took over the Syrian peace mission from Kofi Annan this month.

Iran has remained a close ally of the Beshar Assad regime and has opposed any form of foreign military intervention in the Syrian conflict.
