Iranian writer cleared of charges
Yaghoub Yadali

Yaghoub Yadali, an Iranian writer, finally has been acquitted of charges brought against him based on the content of his stories.

Yadali, who was sentenced to one year in jail five years ago, has now been acquitted of all the charges against him by the appellate court, ISNA reported on Monday.

Yadali’s attorney told ISNA that a local representative had filed a complaint about the content of two of Yadali’s books. In one of them, a local woman has an affair with a stranger.

The complainant, with the backing of statements by certain members of the clergy, claimed that the story, which was written in the local dialect, was an insult to the people’s beliefs, the report indicates.

Yaghoub Yadali was sentenced to one year in jail, with nine months of that suspended.

Yadali’s attorney told ISNA that as part of his sentence, his client was sentenced to write an article about a prominent local figure every six months and publish it at his own expense, a measure aimed at restoring his region’s public image.

Now the appellate court has struck down the preliminary court’s ruling and cleared Yadali of all charges, his lawyer reported yesterday.

Yadali has not published any new books in recent years.
