Iran warns that Western mistakes can derail nuclear talks
Saeed Jalili

In advance of its nuclear talks with world powers in Iraq, Iran has warned that any miscalculation by the West will harm the success of the negotiations.

The Mehr News Agency reports that Saeed Jalili, the head of Iran’s Supreme Council of National Security and the country’s top nuclear negotiator, said on Sunday: “The time for the pressure approach has come to an end.”

Jalili spoke in a meeting with Michel Rocard, the former French prime minister visiting Iran, saying that “illogical” statements by some Western officials and their “false claims” could be detrimental to the outcome of the nuclear negotiations.

“Western officials should take notice that certain statements are not constructive,” Jalili said; “In Baghdad, we expect confidence-building actions for the people of Iran.”

The next round of talks about Iran’s nuclear program between Iran and the G5+1 will take place on May 23 in Baghdad.

Rocard said during his visit that the first such meeting last month in Istanbul was “a positive step forward” and he expressed every hope that the talks in Baghdad will lead to “mutual understanding and satisfaction.”

On Saturday, Iran’s Foreign Minister also met with Rocard, emphasizing that Iran’s Supreme Leader considers the building and storing of nuclear weapons to be “haram” or religiously forbidden.
