Iranian dissident Mehdi Khazali released
Mehdi Khazali

Prominent government critic Mehdi Khazali has been released by Iranian authorities after 70 days in prison.

The Kaleme opposition website reports that Kahzali was released into “the custody of his mother” on Monday.

The report indicates that Khazali has lost a great deal of weight due to his hunger strike, which was in protest against what he called his “illegal arrest and detention in prison.”

Khazali had ended his hunger strike a week before his release.

He has been sentenced to 14 years in jail and exile to Barazjan. He is also sentenced to 90 lashes.

His charges are linked to his critical blogs about the government and specifically about President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Khazali is the son of hardline cleric Ayatollah Abolghassem Khazali, who has disowned his son over their different political views.

His mother has also been quoted as saying: “On many occasions, his father and I have told him that we will only be satisfied with him if he mends his ways.”
