Iran’s Guardian Council has approved about half of the nominees who registered to run in the parliamentary election this March.

Abbasali Kadkhodayi, a spokesman for the Guardian Council, announced that 2,700 nominees out of the 4,877 who registered have been found eligible, and those who have been disqualified will get one last opportunity to appeal the decision.

The final results will be announced February 11.

Kadkhodayi added that the majority of disqualifications were due to the failure of the nominees to present the required documents on time.

The ninth parliamentary elections for the Islamic Republic’s Parliament are slated for March 2, 2012.

Major Iranian reformist groups and figures have announced that they will not run in the elections in protest of the crackdown on reformist politicians that has been ongoing since the last presidential elections in 2009.
