Iran invites IAEA inspectors to visit

Iran has invited inspectors from the International Atomic Agency to travel to Tehran, a Western diplomat was quoted as saying.

On Tuesday evening, the Iranian Student News Agency (ISNA) reported that in a letter sent on December 9, Iran has called on IAEA inspectors to visit Tehran.

In addition, Fereydoon Abbasi, the head of the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization, wrote a letter to the IAEA on October 30, inviting its representatives to travel to Tehran for talks and negotiations.

Reuters has also reported that Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iran’s representative to the IEAE, has written to Yukiya Amano, the group’s chief, saying a delegation of its inspectors can travel to Iran in late January.

The invitation comes after the IAEA released a report indicating that Iran’s nuclear program may have a military component.

The release of this report began a wave of fresh sanctions against Iran, the most recent being a boycott of Iran’s Central Bank by Britain and the U.S.

Western countries insist they will not tolerate Iran having a military nuclear capacity.

Iran has always maintained that its nuclear program is peaceful and that it has no military ambition in this regard.
