Allegations of assassination plot referred to Security Council

On Monday, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon referred the case of an assassination plot allegedly involving Iran to the UN Security Council.

The case includes documents from the United States, Iran and Saudi Arabia.

One week ago, U.S. authorities accused the Islamic Republic of taking part in an assassination plot against the Saudi Ambassador to the United Sates.

Susan Rice, the American ambassador to the UN, said she has met with 15 Security Council members to discuss a course of action against Iran.

Iran has denied all allegations, calling them a “baseless political and media show.”

The Iranian Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying U.S. allegations have no legal basis.

In connection with the case, the U.S. has arrested Mansour Arbabsiar, an Iranian-American, and named Gholam Shakouri as another suspect.

While the U.S. alleges that Shakouri is a member of the Quds Force, the international arm of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps, the Mehr News Agency reported that he is a “key” member of the the People’s Mojahedin Organization who travels under two other names: Gholam-hossein Shakouri and Ali Shakouri.

The People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran, also known as MKO, is an exiled Iranian dissident group which the Islamic Republic considers an archenemy.

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi has also announced that his ministry is willing to review any documents regarding the detained Iranian Mansour Arbabsiar.
