Iranian student flogged for insulting the president

Amin Niayifar, a Tehran University student, was flogged 30 times for the charge of insulting President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The Kaleme opposition website reports that Niayifar is currently in section 350 of Evin Prison and will be released next week. He was arrested during protests in December of 2010 and sentenced to six months in prison and 30 lashes.

He had been released on bail and later had to report to Evin Prison after his sentence was confirmed by the appellate court.

Peyman Aref and Samieh Towhidlou are another two students recently flogged for their activism.

Aref, a journalist, was sentenced to 74 lashes for “insulting” the president. He was also handed a one-year jail term and a lifetime ban from journalism and political activity. He was flogged at the end of his jail term on October 9, and pictures of his injured back were published in the media.

Towhidlou was sentenced to one year in jail and 50 lashes for her blogging activities. Her jail term was overturned in the appellate court, but her sentence of 50 lashes was upheld, and she was flogged with her clothes on.
