Iranian dissident Mehdi Khazali released after hunger strike
Mehdi Khazali

Mehdi Khazali, the jailed Iranian publisher and government dissident, was released last night after 27 days in custody.

The Jaras opposition website reports that Khazali ended his hunger strike upon his release.

The head of Hayan Publishing was arrested in July and held in the security section of Evin Prison for several days before being transferred to the general 350 ward.

Khazali has been arrested a number of times following the 2009 crackdown on post-election protesters. He was detained for a month last September and for another month in July of 2010, after which he was released on bail of $20,000.

Over the past two years he has published on his personal weblog several notes that were critical of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his administration.

He has described the president as an “attention freak” and had predicted that Ahmadinejad would someday stand against the Supreme Leader.

Mehid Kahzali is the son of the ultra-conservative cleric and member of the Assembly of Experts Abolghassem Khazali, who has disowned his son for his critical views of the government.
