Concern mounts for jailed photographer
Maryam Majd

Detained photojournalist Maryam Majd is suffering from ill health in Evin Prison, says the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran, citing a source close to the Majd family.

“Maryam was allowed a few minutes to visit with her family last week, after 12 days of a complete news blackout,” says the quoted source. “Apparently she was not well at all during that visit and kept insisting that she wanted to return home.”

Majd’s mother has written a letter to the Tehran Prosecutor calling for her daughter’s release from the two-square-metre cell in which she is reportedly being held.

“The officials have taken all of her things from the house and are aware that there are no problems. Even when the family saw the judge to follow up on her case, they were told that Maryam would soon be released,” says the family source.

Maryam Majd, a sports photojournalist, was arrested on June 21, a day before she was supposed to travel to Germany to cover the Women’s World Cup of Soccer. Her arrest has been condemned by the head of the German parliament, who wrote to his Iranian counterpart, Ali Larijani, to call for her immediate release.

German Human Rights Commissioner Markus Loening has also spoken out against Majd’s treatment.
