Iranian opposition groups report that Tehran’s prosecutor has cut off visitation rights for political prisoners specified in a lsit by interrogators at the intelligence ministry.
Kaleme website reports the ministry provided a list of political prisoners in Evin and Rejaishahr Prisons.
Some prisoners have reportedly been completely denied any visiting rights, while others are being allowed one visit every few months.
The Islamic Republic government arrested thousands of people after the controversial re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad triggered mass demonstrations, with the opposition claiming the vote was rigged. Many of these prisoners were accused of “activities against national security and propaganda against the regime” and have received harsh sentences.
Most of these prisoners were also denied the leave customarily allotted to prisoners during Norooz, the start of the Iranian New Year.
Iranian judiciary officials deny having any political detainees and refer to these inmates as “security prisoners.”
Tehran’s prosecutor has previously said prison furloughs are only for those who have moved toward “repentance and the reform of their ways.”
