On May 14, Turkey will hold its general presidential and parliamentary elections. This time, the opponents of the current President Recep Tayyip Erdogan have united to oust him from power, but a number of other political experts warn that the likelihood of Erdogan remaining in power is not so remote afterall. For this election season an 80% turnout is expected as the Turkish electorate, like many around the world, is becoming increasingly polarised.

This week’s selected cartoon by Musa Keklik refers to the hopes of the dissenting civil society in Turkey to win the elections.

On October 29, 2014, Erdogan inaugurated the presidential complex (seen in the illustration) in Ankara, dubbed the “White Palace” by critics and seen as a sign of the current president’s totalitarianism. Its cost is estimated at $1.2 billion.
