Iran’s Minister of Justice has expressed concern about the high number of prisoners in the country.

IRNA reports that at a meeting of judges and court personnel in Semnan on Wednesday November 25, Mostafa PourMohammadi said: “In Iran, for every 100,000 people, 269 are prisoners. These statistics are higher than the global average and cause for serious concern.”

He added that in the past nine months, nine million files have been added to the judiciary’s caseload.

Prior to Iran’s 1979 Revolution, Iran, with a population of 36 million, had about 10,000 prisoners. Statistics released last year indicate that Iran now has 210,000 prisoners.

Iranian officials have confirmed that Iran’s prison population is among the 10 largest in the world.
