A spokesman for the Iranian foreign ministry said on Saturday August 31 that following the reopening of the British Embassy in Iran, diplomatic relations will remain at the level of charge d’affaires.
Majid Takhtravanchi said, however, the charge d’affaires will change from non-resident to resident.
He added that British Foreign Minister Philip Hammond will lead a British delegation to Tehran to take part in a simple ceremony marking the opening of the embassy.
The Guardian reported earlier that the residence of the British ambassador and some parts of the building have been repaired and the embassy will begin at first with a number of diplomats and staff.
The British Embassy in Tehran was closed down after a group of angry protesters climbed over its walls, broke windows and burned documents in the building. The protests flared up after Britain imposed sanctions on Iran’s Central Bank, which prompted the Iranian Parliament to reduce diplomatic relations with that country.
