Fatemeh Karroubi, the wife of Iranian opposition leader Mehdi Karroubi, who has been under house arrest since 2011, has written to the Minister of Intelligence saying the “lack of accountability” around the opposition detainees has increased since the Rohani administration took power.

According to Saham news, Fatemeh Karroubi wrote a letter addressed to Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi, noting that the executor of the house arrests has always been the ministry of intelligence.

Fatemeh Karroubi writes that the officials carrying out the house arrest tell them that the prisoners’ rights depend on the decisions of “higher officials” and no one is clear on who they are.

She writes these so called higher officials are “unknown” parties who are determining even the smallest details regarding the house arrests.

Karroubi writes: “During the term of the former intelligence minister, there was an intermediary who could make decisions about the small daily matters or relay the decisions of his superiors. Now there is a complete shirking of responsibility and no effective intermediary to resolve the smallest matter.”

Mehdi Karroubi, MirHosein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard have been under house arrest since February of 2011.

During his campaign for election in 2013, Hassan Rohani promised to end the house arrests but so far he has not been able to make any significant change in their situation.

The government says the opposition leaders are under house arrest by the order of Ayatollah Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, and the decision of the Supreme Council of National Security.
