Iran warns sanctions would threaten nuclear deal

The Iranian foreign minister says new sanctions against Iran would jeopardize the achievements of the nuclear negotiations.

Mohammad Javad Zarif, who met with his U.S. counterpart on Friday on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, said: “We have an agreement that looks ahead to achieving a final comprehensive agreement. Anyone who destroys this deal, in my opinion, should be isolated by the global community, be it the U.S. Congress or any other.”

The White House has been hard at work trying to convince Congress not to pass any further sanctions on Iran. It has also said, however, that the possibility of reaching a final deal is fifty-fifty.

Zarif said it is time for the international community to stand firmly against the threat of new sanctions because they will destroy important achievements.

Meanwhile, the Iranian delegation has been meeting with its U.S. and EU counterparts in Zurich at the deputy foreign minister level to continue the nuclear talks.

Zarif has been quoted as saying that the parties have reached agreement on all general issues and now have to work out the details.

The deadline for the final deal is June 30.
