Ayatollah Sadegh Larijani head of Iran's judiciary says the house arrests of opposition leaders MirHosein Mousavi, Zahra Rahnavard and Mehdi Karroubi are not unconstitutional and can be described as being in accordance with the rights of the National Security Supreme Council in Article 176 of the constitution.
Ayatollah Larijani said the judiciary has “more than the necessary evidence to prove the charges against these individuals”.
Iranian MP Ali Motahari has been repeatedly calling on the government to end the house arrest of the three leaders of the Green Movement who challenged the legitimacy of the vote count in the presidential election of 2009. Motahari has called for these leaders to be given a chance to defend themselves against all charges in an open and official court.
The authorities have not yet laid any official charges against Mousavi, Rahnavard and Karroubi; however, hardliners of the regime accuse them of “sedition”.
Mousavi, Rahnavard and Karroubi have been under house arrest since February of 2011.
In a statement on Wednesday, the prosecutor general Ebrahim Raisi stated that the ending of the house arrests is not on the agenda of the National Security Supreme Council
