Message from world volleyball body may be linked to Qavami

It appears that the World Federation of Volleyball may be trying to pressure Iran regarding Ghoncheh Qavami, the Iranian woman who was arrested following her attempt to enter a stadium to see a volleyball game in Tehran.

The Mehr News Agency reports that Ari Grasa, the head of the World Federation of Volleyball, has written a letter to Mohammadreza Davarzani, the head of the Iranian Federation of Volleyball, expressing the global body’s gratitude to Iran for its willingness to host the championships but informing Davarzani that Argentina has been chosen as the host.

Ghoncheh Qavami and a group of other women were arrested in July when trying to enter a stadium to watch the volleyball game between Italy and Iran.

The women were released the next day; however, Qavami was rearrested and charged with propaganda against the regime. She has now been sentenced to a year in jail.

The judiciary has said, however, that her arrest in not connected with “sports.”

Davarzani has also told reporters that Qavami’s arrest is not connected with volleyball and that is only a false representation by western media.
