Up to a year in jail for woman detained at volleyball match

Ghoncheh Qavami, one of the women who demanded entrance to a stadium to watch a volleyball game, has been sentenced to one year in jail for “propaganda against the regime.”

The Shargh daily reported on Sunday November 2 that Qavami’s lawyer, Mahmoud Alizadeh, said while he and his client have not yet received the official court order, he was shown the one-year prison sentence by the judge.

He added that because Qavami has no previous convictions, the court could be more lenient and reduce the sentence.

Qavami was arrested last June along with a group of other women who were seeking entrance into the Iran-Italy volleyball game in Tehran. The group was released soon after.

Qavami, however, was re-arrested when she went to Evin Prison to collect her personal belongings 10 days later.

Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, a senior judiciary official, has said that her second arrest was “not linked to sports.”
