Activist Qavami ends hunger strike after closed-door trial

The trial of Ghoncheh Qavami, the jailed Iranian activist, was held on Tuesday, October 14 behind closed doors in branch 16 of Tehran’s Revolutionary Court for the charge of propaganda against the Islamic Republic regime.

The court, according to ISNA, heard Qavami’s defence and has announced that the proceedings have culminated and a verdict will be issued by next week at the latest. No further details have been released regarding the proceedings.

Qavami was arrested in June after trying to enter a stadium with a group of other women to watch a volleyball game. While all the detainees were released, Qavami was later rearrested on a charge of “propaganda against the regime.”

Qavami has been under temporary detention for more than 100 days and has been on a hunger strike for the past two weeks to protest the lack of due process.

Her family has announced that their daughter is no longer on a hunger strike.

While Qavami was arrested in connection with her stand on a woman’s right to enter sports stadiums, Iran’s deputy head of the judiciary, Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, has been quoted as saying that her charges are not related to “sports.”
