Iran’s Department of the Environment says all interference waves could potentially cause cancer and it recommends the complete elimination of these waves.
IRNA reports that a spokesman for the department said on October 2, 2014, that the government has to find a different way to address the issue of “cultural invasion.”
Iranian censorship authorities use interference waves to block satellite programming and the reception of Persian-language programs broadcast from outside Iran.
Saeed Motesadi of the Department of the Environment announced that it has established a committee with the Ministry of Communications and Technology to review the use of interference waves by the government.
The head of the Department of the Environment, Massoumeh Ebtekar, has spoken out before against the use of these waves and linked them to cancer. She has also called for the elimination of “illegal towers” that relay interference waves.
The former administration denied any link between the electromagnetic waves produced to jam satellite programs and the incidence of cancer among Iranians.
